On the next show: Women Who Rock

On this Saturday’s Alternate Take on dublab, I’ll be joined by Evelyn McDonnell, editor of the collection of essays and full-color illustrations called “Women Who Rock: Bessie to Beyoncé: Girl Groups to Riot Grrrl.” The collection features over 100 formative musicians from many angles of the music spectrum, traveling through blues, gospel, folk, funk, punk, pop, rock and hip-hop — all from the perspective of writers and illustrators who are also women.

The project is pulled together and edited by music journalist Evelyn McDonnell, who, in addition to serving as associate professor of journalism at Loyola Marymount University, has written about musicians and movements ranging from The Runaways and Patti Smith to Bjork and The Go-Go’s. McDonnell’s feature on the recently resuscitated Riot Grrrl movement has just been published in the New York Times. She also makes an appearance in the 2018 film “Bad Reputation” about the life and career of Joan Jett.

Tune in this Saturday, May 11th, from 12 noon until 2:00 pm Pacific Time as Evelyn and I discuss the book, play music and celebrate the contributions of women to the world of music.
