There’s always time for new music

Each time I do a radio show, I refer to music of many different types and eras. No matter where that road takes me, I’m ultimately happiest when I discover new music. That’s the focus for the first show in 2023, where I look back to discoveries from 2022.

This show does not pretend to be an all-encompassing summary of all of the music released in 2022. If you’d like to hear more music from last year as it was released, I suggest checking out my dublab archives. Even then, there’s too much ground to cover with the time allotted.

Listen to Alternate Take: 2022 Year in Review on Mixcloud

Music discovery should never follow just one playbook. I look for new music in several places — from friends, family, magazine and online articles, social media, the local library, my inbox, radio shows, and even an occasional algorithm. From there, I follow the breadcrumbs to see where the path leads.

This is a video collection of some of the music featured in the January edition of Alternate Take.

Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul – Ceci n’est pas un cliché (Official Video)

Our first stop is Belgium with Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul. It starts with a playful stream of cliques that ultimately gives way to soulful, danceable funk.

Roger Eno, Cecily Eno, Lotti Eno – Bells (with Voices)

I was intrigued by Roger Eno’s latest vocal work. I didn’t realize until further investigation that the vocalists featured in his newest work of his daughter, Cecily Eno and her sister Lotti Eno. They are also featured in the video of “Bells (with Voices)”.

Peel Dream Magazine – ‘Pictionary (Official Video)

In the tradition of The Beach Boys and The High Llamas, the Los Angeles-based artist Peel Dream Magazine relies in part on arrangements to tell the story. The rest of the story is up to your imagination.

JUNGLE – GOOD TIMES / PROBLEMZ (Official Video)

It’s too bad there’s no video for the Braxe + Falcon Remix of “GOOD TIMES” by Jungle, because it’s the perfect entry for this radio show. Its welcoming groove is unmatched, even by the original version of the song. Nonetheless, the party vibe is well worth a visit on the video for “GOOD TIMES / PROBLEMZ”.

Cate Le Bon – Remembering Me (Official Video)

Off-kilter is where you’ll find Cate Le Bon on most days. It’s also a place I love playing from. “Remembering Me” is a perfect follow-up to “Monday Blue” by Jimi Tenor. This video recalls Bowie and Pantone with equal verve.

The radio show for the January edition of Alternate Take is available in the dublab archives. You’ll also find the complete playlist, along with archives of each show.

2023 is already off to a great start, promising new sounds and discoveries at every turn. Join me on the airwaves every second Saturday of each month at 12 noon (Pacific) on dublab.
