The conversation between Kraftwerk and Detroit

The kids in Detroit heard Kraftwerk before Kraftwerk heard them. But the Düsseldorf band was quick to recognize that a movement was beginning with the onset of Detroit Techno.

Soon, a long-distance relationship began where both parties contributed to an on-going conversation that has fueled the modern-day electronic movement and dance floors everywhere, felt beyond their respective genres.

In this radio segment, it’s a look at what that conversation sounded like, from its roots to some of the ripple effects and the full-circle. It’s only two hours long and could include so much more. But in addition to some of the usual suspects, including Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, I managed to throw some shine on The Dirtbombs, Omar S and Andre Holland.

Man meets machine, and they form a bond that leaves a lasting imprint. Listen in to The Conversation: Kraftwerk and Detroit on Alternate Take for the full story.

In the meantime, watching this clip of how Detroit reacted to Kraftwerk In dance form on The New Dance Show tells the story perfectly.
