I caught up with DJ and electronic music innovator Richie Hawtin to talk about the concept of time. Hawtin recently released the Time Warps EP and a timed film event highlighting his live show from a decade ago.
I really enjoyed discussing the effect of time on Hawtin’s creative process. We also talked about how it has changed dance music, and how now, in the face of the pandemic, time seems to stand still.
I’ve talked with Hawtin on many occasions over two or so decades (for WDET, Orbit, The Wire, Beatportal), but this conversation might be my favorite.
We covered a lot of ground. We took it all the way back to some of his earliest events and experiments, through to more recent interactions with the dance floor with the CLOSE show.
Then, we moved up through to a recent fashion collaboration with Prada. We also discuss ideas on the topic of on-demand versus live performances.
You can hear our conversation Alternate Take: Time Warp with Richie Hawtin on the dublab archives.
It really makes you consider how time can be used as yet another instrument to express creativity.
As always, thanks for being out there.
