I’m working it out with space rock and a workout mix

I don’t need to be the one to tell you that there’s a lot going on in the world right now. We’ve all been thrust into a “new normal” which means new habits, new goals, and new ways of thinking. For me, that also means new ways of listening.

Fortunately, amid all the chaos, the music keeps spinning. That means that no matter what else is going on around me, there’s always an escape. On this edition of Alternate Take, entitled Work It Out, we start out in the stars. The first stop is on Saturn with the new collection of space rock out of Michigan called Southeast of Saturn. It doesn’t take long to get to Pluto Drive with The Creatures.

New music from Laura Viers takes us to Another Space and Time, before reaching back to classic Ultramarine with the 30-year remastered, reissued album, Folk. We then get otherworldly with an almost-hidden b-side from Peter Gabriel.

Then we work it out again — as in a workout mix. It’s the kind of workout mix I want to hear while exercising. Very early we arrive at 4THSEX with an update on the Chicago house style we love before exploring new sounds with Cuushe, based out of Japan. I make good on my promise to play Sister Sledge before exploring more instant classics from Kllo and boerd. Then, it’s a perfect cool-down with new ambient landscapes from Heathered Pearls, followed by Pharoah Sanders.

We all have our own ways of working out all that’s been happening. This is how I do it, and I hope you like it.

Find the Work It Out edition of Alternate Take on dublab. It’s also available on Mixcloud. And as always, thanks for being out there.

Here’s the music video for Line 851 (Express) by 4THSEX. It’s a tribute to a bygone era collected from flyers and memories.
